This ad hoc series on fan behavior continues. We wrote in the past about about Met's fans, and then about Phillies fans, and now, Phillies fans again.
Yesterday, our Philadelphia brethren added to their legacy of irreverence. On Science day, an event conjured to imbue intellectual curiosity into our impressionable youth, the Phillies organization partnered with the University of Pennsylvania and arranged to have a robot throw out the first pitch. Seemed like a interesting approach, and in another city, probably would have been a stellar success.
In Philly however, the land where fans have booed Santa and cheered when opposing players were injured, the robot failed to impress. Perhaps they were expecting 90 mph on the black, but the engineers toned down the velocity to protect the team mascot at the receiving end of the pitch. The robot unleashed a soft one-hopper and was resoundingly booed.
You can read more and see the video of the first pitch here.
If you don't live or work with me, you may not have yet had the opportunity to grow tired of my self-righteous opinions. This blog is for you.

Gotta Love Phillies Fans
Sometimes we understand things at the gut level that we cannot describe rationally. This was the case when I wrote about Mets fans last year and, though I could not articulate why the particular predicament was apropos of a Met fan, the post reverberated across the imaginary readership of WWDS and excited the blogosphere.
Similarly, I don't know why this incident, a goofy fan runs on the field and gets knocked out by a rent-a-cop with a tazer gun, seems right for Philadelphia, but I am sure you will all agree that it is:
I know that one point does not a pattern make, and that two posts do not a series make, but keep your eye out for other stories that see seem intuitively befitting of a particular fan base and this might just become a staple of the blog.

Gotta Love Met's Fans
I don't know what stereotypical bias I harbor against Met's fans but, in my mind, this story could only happen to one of them. Maybe a Phillies fan, maybe....but probably not.
So the Met's were about midway through last night's loss to the Braves when one of their faithful followers wandered into the restroom outside of section 338 and promptly, inexplicably, lost a gold tooth into the latrine. Reflecting on the sizable investment she had undoubtedly made in her shiny symbol of material success, she immediately decided to go in after it.
Yes, public restrooms tend to be filthy and high volume joints like those at sports stadiums must be near the top of the list in that regard. But a gold tooth is a gold tooth and if your peeps expect you to rock a grill full of bling, you can't show up in section 338 looking like Michael Strahan all of a sudden. She had to get it out. That's when the story got good.
As you may have guessed, she got her hand stuck down in there and wound up spending a couple of hours sitting in slime with the toilet flushing on her arm the entire time. Plumbers were called to the scene and had to disassemble the toilet to set her free.
Apparently, the crowd following the toilet-tooth incident rivaled the crowd following the game. The tooth was never recovered. Go Met's.
